What to expect

I am very pleased to offer you 1-2-1 landscape photography tuition workshops in the Lake District and Scottish Highlands. To make an enquiry and book a workshop, please use the Form to contact me and to arrange a suitable date.

These private workshops are completely bespoke, and tailored to suit your specific individual requirements. As such, they are suitable for all skill and fitness levels - be it a beginner or advanced photographer; and visiting high mountain locations or staying lower at more accessible lakesides, woodlands and valleys.

Technical aspects - using manual settings to master the exposure triangle; where and how to focus for sharp images; exposure and focus bracketing; use of filters for creative results and more!
Composition - developing your ability to identify and arrange elements within the frame to create well balanced and compelling images.
Expressive photography - teach you how to create evocative images through your own creativity and from your experience in the landscape on the day.
Location advice - understanding how light interacts with the landscape in different locations and how to identify areas that will may make impactful images.
Everything else! - we will have lots of time to discuss anything and everything else in between. The aforementioned is a framework for me to provide you with the best learning experience for your time with me.

Why choose me?

Qualified Teacher Status - I have been working as a professional secondary school teacher for six years, so I have excellent experience of teaching and learning methods and strategies; a confident ability to articulate and deliver course content; and a good understanding of how to create a comfortable and relaxed environment to ensure that you feel able to maximise your learning during your time with me.
Qualified Mountain Leader - if you wish to visit mountainous locations during your workshop, you can do so with confidence in me to lead you safely in that environment. I have vast experience of mountaineering and backpacking in the Lake District and Scotland, (in all weather conditions - believe me!). I qualified as a Summer Mountain Leader in October 2024, and I am now working towards my Winter Mountain Leader qualification.
Location Knowledge - I have excellent local knowledge of the Lake District National Park, having lived in an photographed here for the past six years. My favoured style of photography is to identify unique perspectives and capture them in the most dramatic weather conditions, with the aim to create expressive and compelling imagery (hopefully that’s why you’re here reading this!) My experience and knowledge of the Scottish Highlands is also extensive, specifically in the Mamores, Torridon and Assynt.

Pricing

Prices vary depending upon the duration of the workshop. I prefer to offer half-day or full day workshops in order to accommodate the optimal daylight hours for taking photographs in the different seasons.

Exact itinerary shall be agreed with students well in advance of the workshop, and depending upon the prevailing weather conditions on the day itself.

Half day - £150 (4 hours)

Full day - £300 (8 hours)

When making your enquiry and booking, I suggest that you consider your preferred time of day that you would like to be out taking photographs (sunrise/sunset); and whether you wish to have tuition time after our time in the field to process your images and learn editing techniques with me.

Back-to-back bookings are permitted if you wish to maximise your time with me (for example, two Full Day workshops; or one Full Day and one Half Day workshops).

Additional Information

Please note, I live in the Lake District National Park so my availability to offer workshops in this location is very flexible.

I teach in a secondary school on a part time (0.8FTE) basis, with every Wednesday and weekends off work. As such, I am often available for bookings on these days during term time.

I spend nearly all of my holiday time away from school in the Scottish Highlands. If you wish to book me for private tuition in Scotland during term time, I may request an additional fee for travel expenses to make this financially viable for me. During holiday time, I will be there regardless so will not require this additional fee. Please liaise with me in your enquiry regarding your desired location.
